Joan McLean
Owner, Stained Glass Garden |
After earning a degree in painting from UC Berkeley and teaching
elementary school for 12 years in Oakland, California, Joan McLean
joined forces with her brother Bruce McLean and three other partners
to open the Stained Glass Garden in 1976.
The Stained Glass Garden was the first store to open on Fourth Street,
which at the time consisted of dirt roads, a goat farm, empty lots, and
the Amtrak railroad tracks just 30 yards away. In 1986, Joan bought out
her partners and within the first year of sole ownership expanded the store
threefold. In 1992, SGG relocated down the street to its current location
at 1800 Fourth Street, Berkeley, California. |

Berkeley Mayor Shirley Dean presenting
Joan McLean with Mayoral Proclamation
July 2001 |
On July 27, 2001, Berkeley Mayor Shirley Dean presented Joan with
a Mayoral Proclamation at SGG's 25-year anniversary celebration.
This award acknowledges the Stained Glass Garden's contributions
to art, education, and business.
" The Fourth Street shopping area has been declared, by Metropolitan Home
magazine, as one of the 10 best shopping areas in the United States," Dean
said, adding, "that has a lot to do with people like Joan."
In 2000, the Stained Glass Garden also earned the "Diablo Best of
the East Bay" award for its superior customer service, products, classes,
and designs. Joan has designed many of the store's proprietary glass panel
patterns, which are fabricated by various California artists and sold at
SGG. |
